Fools:A Comic Fable Onstage 7:30pm Oct 8-10, 17-18

Corey Peck as Leon Tolchinsky and Lane Hansen as Sophia Zubritsky are seen rehearsing their roles for Theatre in the Woods’ 20th season opener, the comic fable “Fools” by Neil Simon. Performances are Thursday-Saturday, October 8,9,10 at 7:30 and again on Saturday, October 17 at 7:30 and Sunday, October 18 at 2:00 at the Erika Quam Memorial Theater at 605 1st. Street, Shell Lake. Admission is $10, with a student and senior special of $8.00 on Thursday and Sunday. Reservations may be made by calling the theater at 468-4387.

Calling All Actors Theatre in the Woods is offering a three hour workshop on acting Saturday, September 12, starting promptly at 9:00 AM. This workshop, led by veteran professional actor and director Jan Lee, will focus on the fact that acting is doing. Through the use of specific exercises participants will discover how to unleash the energy that fuels characterization. Directors are also welcome to attend, as well as those with no stage experience but with a desire to test the waters. Casual dress which allows for active movement is appropriate. Directors Karen Kaufman and Carolyn Burnett of the upcoming Theatre in the Woods production of Shakespeare’s “Much Ado about Nothing”, encourage all with interest in auditioning for that production to attend this workshop. “Theatre in the Woods is able to offer this unique opportunity with support from the Wisconsin Arts Board”, explains Burnett. “We will be offering later workshops geared to specific challenges such as speaking Shakespeare’s language, but this initial workshop is for anyone and everyone of high school age and older with an interest in being on stage or in directing.” The workshop is free of charge but those expecting to attend should make that known by calling Burnett at 354-3803 or emailing shiitake@chibardun.net. The workshop will be held in the Quam theater, located at 605 1st. Street, Shell Lake. Theatre in the Woods, Ltd. is a nonprofit community theater serving greater Washburn County and surrounding communities since 1990. TITW is a member of the Wisconsin Arts Board and the Wisconsin Association of Community Theaters and is open without barrier to all interested parties.	*Auditions for "Fools" August 26 and 27* Auditions will be held Wednesday and Thursday evenings, August 26 and 27, at 6:30 at the Erika Quam Memorial Theater for “Fools”, a delightful, fanciful comedyby Neal Simon. The production October 8-10, 17 & 18, will open TITW's 20th season as “Fools” did for the 10th season and the inaugural season in 1990. To celebrate Theatre in the Woods' history and connect with those other two productions,a few actors will reprise their roles from one or the other of the earlierperformances, and in one case take over the part played by a family member. Yet to be cast are the two young "romantic" leads, Leon the schoolteacher and Sophia his pupil and ultimate breaker of the village curse. Actors for these roles should be able to play an age between late teens and mid twenties. The three remaining parts are the magistrate, probably an older male, the butcher, and the mailman, either gender, no specific age.Carolyn Burnett will direct, with Eva Olsgard putting a unique look to the set design, and Donna Barnes-Haesemeyer and Hanna Bartz designing colorful costumes. “Even though Theatre in the Woods has produced this play twice before, and I directed the first time, our audience is certainly in for a new treat this third time around”, assures Burnett.Auditions are open to all regardless of past acting experience. DON’T MISS - *PICKIN’ UP STEAM* Pickin' Up Steam is a contemporary acoustic quartet, which utilizes the traditional bluegrass instrumentation of guitar, mandolin, banjo, string bass, and fiddle. Each artist brings to the group a wide variety of influences, including rock, jazz, latin, folk, country and traditional bluegrass. Every member of this ensemble possesses strong improvisational skills, keeping every performance fresh and taking the music to new heights. The group also places great emphasis on the vocal aspect of its performance, singing in well-blended three-part harmony. They bring traditional bluegrass into the 21stcentury with their unique arrangements of bluegrass standards along with original compositions with thoughtful lyrics and exciting, complex instrumentals. Joe Cruz on guitar, mandolin and vocals is regarded as one of the most versatile multi-stringed instrumentalists on the Twin Cities music scene today. Meeting was called to order at 7:30 pm. We welcomed Lela, one of the TitW neighbors, who joined us for the potluck picnic and meeting.

Correction to June minutes – None. Sam made a motion to accept the minutes, seconded by Cook.

Treasurer’s Report – The Aladdin production brought in $1,000. Great show. New Vanguard fund – Wellington. We have a CD due next month, so the Finance committee will be meeting soon. Cook made a motion to accept the Treasurer’s report, seconded by Sam.

Ongoing Business

a. Curtain Call deadline is 2/15, 5/15, 8/15, 11/15. Ideas for the September Curtain Call – nominating committee, Fools, Aladdin wrap-up and PGP promotion.

Quam Day on 8/29/09 and a garage sale on 10/10/09 with a possible bake sale. We will need a committee to organize the garage sale.
Fourth of July Art Fair – several people stopped by the booth, it was a nice day. We handed out brochures and bookmarkers. Idea to do this next year with SLAC?

New Business

Ticket price discussion – tabled for next month. Some discussion that we are a non-profit organization and we want people to be able to attend our productions. Perhaps this is not the time to increase prices.

Audio equipment request discussion – Roger presented to the board some of the audio needs he has for his show that also could benefit future performances. He had met with Larry (Duck for the Oysters) to look and discuss options. Larry suggested speaker, audio mixing board, and microphones. Larry has access to wholesale and discounted prices for equipment. Costs are as follows: speaker to be mounted over the presidium at $220, Yamaha mixing board – very user friendly at $192, and microphones at $116 each. The total would be approximately $800 to $1,000 and would have substantial savings for us as these are wholesale and closeout prices. Larry would volunteer his time for installation. Suggestion was made to review this proposal with Bob, which Roger will do. Jessica made a motion to make the required purchase of audio equipment, Jean seconded the motion. The motion was opened up for discussion. There was concern regarding the timeline for the project, there were board members not present who would be interested in discussion on this topic, and we would need to review the finances with Patti before a decision could be met. The motion was tabled for this month and would be reviewed in August. Roger will follow up with Bob and also meet with Patti about finances.

Next Meeting will be Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at 7pm.

With Stones in His Pockets, playwright Marie Jones turns th e movie business on its head. The play, directed by guest artist Shell Lake native Julie Ahasay and produced by Theatre in the Woods, takes place in and around a small village in County Kerry, Ireland. The story centers on the set of Quiet Valley, another Irish film written, produced, directed and starring movie people from anywhere but Ireland. The real Irish people do have a role to play-they’re the extras, paid 40 pounds a day to stand around looking “dispossessed”, “angry”, “defeated”, and above all, colorful and authentic. In the movie. But in the play, the extras become the stars playing out their lives against the backdrop of Hollywood dreams and folly. Two actors play two of those Irish extras. These same two also play just about everyone else associated with the film-15 individuals in all. Men, women, and children. Scottish bouncers. Glamour girls. Angry teenagers. Charming old drunks. Accent coaches. Uppity assistant directors. Kindly school teachers. Theatre in the Woods will be hosting the next in its series of meal and play readings on Saturday morning, April 4th. Anyone interested is invited to come and read a part or just listen. The play will be William Shakespeare’sMuch Ado About Nothing, which comes to the TiTW stage in March of 2010. Directors Carolyn Burnett and Karen Kaufman want to get an early start on exploring, understanding, and enjoying this wicked romantic comedy. “Shakespeare’s plays really come alive when they are spoken aloud. We want people to get an idea of why we are so excited to present this play to area audiences,” says Karen Kaufman, one of the play’s directors. “People with no acting experience are especially invited to participate.	We love the community that arises from just sitting around a table together reading and sharing a meal. And as different people read the parts, we as directors get new ideas for how we want the play to be.” Theatre in the Woods invites anyone who is interested to come for fun and stay for brunch. This is a great way to meet new people, investigate a play, and maybe begin to consider whether you might like to take to the stage. Correction to December minutes – a couple typos – sent (6) and undecorated (8). Patti made a motion to accept the minutes with the corrections, seconded by Carol.
Treasurer’s Report – Review of the financials – endowment was updated today at $43,078, account balances are at $11,782. Received $650 in donations this month. We had a high heat bill last month at $700. Sam cleaned out the filters and will make this an annual event for the building committee. Concessions for Kevin’s storytelling brought in $58. Ron made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report, seconded by Sam.

Shell Lake Band – hold for now, we may donate 2 tickets for their auction

Long Range Plan discussion. We reviewed the Long Range Plan draft and made recommendations for each section. We discussed adding in the mission statement and discussed some of the following highlights – liaison with the youth theater group, scholarship, volunteer coordinator position, and more. Patti made a motion to accept the Long Range Plan as amended, seconded by Shirley. Carol will amend the plan and Kathy will send to the Board.
Committee assignments – Carolyn will email all groups to present in February – reporting out the chair and the mission.
WACT conference on 2/28 and 3/1/09. There is money in the budget to fund those who would like to go. Patti and Carolyn will be attending.
New Logo – Patti proposed that we use the new logo on flyers when events are at the Quam.
Website - Shawn along with Jessica and Margaret will be meeting as a new task force.

The Crucible, Arthur Miller’s stirring drama set in the period of the Salem witchcraft trials, takes the stage at the Quam October 24-26 and October 31- November 2. The cast of 20 is busy learning lines and set designer Jay Hands and assistant director Sam Nadon-Nichols have collaborated to create a set that is in itself a work of art. In conjunction with the production of The Crucible, Theatre in the Woods is producing a lecture/discussion/film series. Theatre in the Woods is hosting the first in a series of free discussions in conjunction with its production of Arthur Miller’s *The Crucible.* Associate Professor of Literature, Dr. Nancy Chick of UW Barron County will present “Toil and Trouble: A Literary Witch Hunt” on Wednesday, October 8 at 7 p.m. at the Erika Quam Memorial Theatre, 605 1st Street in Shell Lake. Arthur Miller’s classic American drama was written in 1951, during the height of the “Red Scare” led by Wisconsin Senator Joe McCarthy. The play, set during the 1692 Salem witch trials, cautions against the hysteria that can destroy a society when government tries to usurp man’s civil liberties. Dr. Chick is Vice Chair of the UW Colleges English Department and a UW System Scholar. She teaches literature and women’s studies courses at the Rice Lake campus. Prof. Chick will discuss the phenomenon of “witch hunts.” The majority of those tried for witchcraft, in Europe as well as in Salem, were women whose unconventional beliefs and actions made them particularly susceptible to persecution. “Crises of Conscience: Crucibles in America” is the title of the discussion series, which will feature UW faculty members speaking on different aspects of *The Crucible* and the playwright Arthur Miller. October 15 at 7 p.m. UWEC Associate Professor of History Dr. Selika Ducksworth-Lawton will speak on McCarthy, HUAC, and Arthur Miller. On October 19 at 2 p.m., UW Stout Professor of Philosophy Timothy Shiell will discuss freedom of speech. November 6 at 7 p.m. Michael Epstein’s documentary film *None Without Sin: Miller, Kazan, and the BlacklistOn the Waterfront.* The series is made possible by a grant from the Wisconsin Humanities Council, with funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the State of Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Humanities Council supports public programs that engage the people of Wisconsin the exploration of human cultures, ideas and values. Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this project, however, do not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities. All programs in the series will take place at the Erika Quam Memorial Theatre and are free and open to the public. Adults and students alike are welcome to attend one or all of the programs, each of which is designed to stand alone. The Crucible: Imagining the Lives of Young Women in 17th Century Salem by Donna Barnes Haesemeyer, photos by Cynthia Hochstetler Imagine what it would be like to live in a society so repressive that young women were not allowed to go to school, or even learn to read in many cases. Imagine having to wear a corset and several layers of dark, heavy clothing, scratchy woolen stockings, and keep your hair covered lest you be considered vain. Josie Shipman, Hana Martley, Hannah Bartz, Emilee Organ, Sage Dunham, Mariah Schultz, Emma Frey and Ashley Quinton got together for a July overnight at the director’s house to imagine what it would be like to be a teenager in 1692 Salem. Choreographer Karen Kaufman led the girls through some visualization exercises then danced with them in the forest as Tituba (played by Janet Rowney) drummed in the background. This scene of wild abandon in the otherwise repressive Salem community sets in motion a tragedy that still evokes strong emotions in us more than 300 years after the actual events.
