PICKIN’ UP STEAM, a contemporary acoustic quartet, which utilizes the traditional bluegrass instrumentation of guitar, mandolin, banjo, string bass, aPickin' Up Steam is a contemporary acoustic quartet, which utilizes the traditional bluegrass instrumentation of guitar, mandolin, banjo, string bass, and fiddle. Each artist brings to the group a wide variety of influences, including rock, jazz, latin, folk, country and traditional bluegrass. Every member of this ensemble possesses strong improvisational skills, keeping every performance fresh and taking the music to new heights. The group also places great emphasis on the vocal aspect of its performance, singing in well-blended three-part harmony. They bring traditional bluegrass into the 21stcentury with their unique arrangements of bluegrass standards along with original compositions with thoughtful lyrics and exciting, complex instrumentals.
Joe Cruz on guitar, mandolin and vocals is regarded as one of the most versatile multi-stringed instrumentalists on the Twin Cities music scene today. He has aShellLakeconnection through his wife Roxy Cruz and the guitar/vocal jazz duoCruz with Roxyhas performed on the Quam stage. Michael Burand from southeasternMinnesotaplays banjo and guitar, Pete Brooks, graphic artist raised inHopkins,MNis on bass and vocals, and completing the quartet on guitar, mandolin, fiddle and vocals is theSomerset,WInative Dale Marshall.
Pickin ’Up Steamwill perform as part of the Town and Country Days activities Friday evening at 7:30, September 4 at the Erika Quam Theater,605 1stStreet,ShellLake. Tickets are $12 and may be reserved by calling 468-4387.
